How to Decorate a Yeeps Cake (w/the BEST whipped frosting recipe)

My nephew loves playing a VR game called yeeps hide and seek. This is a cake you can make in the video game.

So I decorated a cake as a yeeps cake for his birthday! I got the food coloring, cake box and cake boards from Walmart. The rest of the cake decorating tools in this blog post are from Amazon.

I cannot wait to share these recipes with you too because they ended up INCREDIBLE! The whipped frosting is my new favorite! It’s so light and tastes like ice cream! It’s taken me forever to find a stable whipped frosting and thanks to TikTok, I’ve found it!

I started decorating this yeeps cake by making my stems. I just melted some Ghirardelli dark chocolate melting wafers in a ramekin in the microwave in 20 second intervals. I put a piping bag in a glass to pour my melted chocolate into and then just snip the tip.

I put some parchment paper on a cutting board and piped some stems for the top of the yeeps cake. In retrospect, I should’ve made them thinner and more curved but it was a good first try. I was so afraid of them breaking so I made a bunch too. Then let them chill in the fridge while you work on the rest of the cake.

I used Sally’s Baking Addiction Vanilla Cake Recipe and it was incredible! It was so super moist and rich and buttery! I tried a couple other vanilla cake recipes over the past year and Sally’s is the BEST so far! It makes 3-9 inch cakes, which is the perfect amount for a birthday cake.

This whipped frosting, you guys…..MAKE IT!

Ingredients:

  • 48oz heavy whipping cream
  • 8oz container mascarpone
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1oz pkg white chocolate zero sugar instant pudding mix
  • 1 tsp clear vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a stand mixer with the whisk attachment and mix on low speed until it starts to get incorporated and then speed it up a bit
  2. Make sure to scrape down the sides and bottom a couple times during the mixing and watch until it is whipped up and then stop or it’ll make butter
  3. It can be used right away for a crumb coat and then put in the fridge. When you pull it out of the fridge it may have air bubbles to just mix it around to smooth it back out

I highly recommend a cake turntable for ease but you can certainly just use a cake stand or a plate.

After you put your crumb coat on your yeeps cake, put it in the freezer for about 10 minutes before adding your final coat of whipped frosting.

This large offset spatula I used actually came from the cake turntable as part of a set.

At first I was thinking of a smooth side so I was using my bench scraper

But then I remembered I had a designed edged scraper from the cake turntable set.

I thought it looked cooler.

Then I used my offset spatula so make the swirl on top by spinning the cake turntable while slightly pushing it into the whipped frosting.

Then I just used my silicone spatula to put whipped frosting in a piping bag fitted with a tip that all came part of a set.

The piping bag in a glass really is a pro move to help you maneuver your icing.

Then I just made circular bloops around the bottom and the top of the cake. A very technical term.

I put the rest of the whipped frosting in a bowl and colored is red with gel food coloring. I started with pink and then went to red. I dunno. Someone told me to do that once to get a more true red, so I did it.

But you love your life on your red hue.

And then do a big red bloop in the middle.

And a small writing piping tip for the swirlies on each bloop. I sound so professional, eh?

I melted more chocolate to ‘glue’ the pieces of stem together so no side was flat. I don’t know if it was necessary but I felt good about it at the time.

Disposable gloves aren’t necessary but I love them for chocolate work specifically because it helps to not melt the chocolate with my hot hands or get a fingerprint in the chocolate. Plus it keeps my nails from chipping off after all the work of painting them. Priorities.

And then just stick it in.

Vibes.

Hilariously enough my nephew didn’t get what the cake was at first, he had never baked a cake in the yeeps hide and seek vr video game, so I told him that’s his new task for the night.

The stem ended up being too tall for my cake box so I took it off and transported all of the stems separately and just put it back on when we arrived.

The cake box is genius, y’all. Made me less stressed about transporting it 2 hours away.

This birthday cake was demolished and then everyone wanted to take some home, including me, because it was just THAT good!

This was my leftover piece.

I was trying to convey how awesome the crumb was and how moist and delicious this cake was!

Ok love you bye
