I love Maryland blue crab! It’s the best seafood ever! I wanted to make a healthier low sodium version of crab cakes so I decided some crab balls would fit much easier in my super cute pink air fryer from Amazon!

Side note, I love these air fryer liners from Amazon because not only does it keep air fryer clean up a breeze but I feel like it keeps my air fryer in better condition so it lasts longer.

My first trick to making these air fryer crab balls healthier and low sodium is I use my Ellie’s Best Mesh Bags from Amazon to rinse my crab. I don’t know the actual percentage of how much salt is rinsed off of the crab but when you try a piece of Maryland blue crab before and after rinsing there is a very noticeable difference so I feel good about it but you’ll have to try for yourself to see the difference!

I just added whatever veggies I had on hand in the fridge and used my super cute pink cutting board, which btw I have been impressed with Paris Hilton’s line of cookware thus far!

Obviously we need to then add back some flavor after rinsing and whilst I love old bay because I’m from Maryland, it has a lot of sodium. I can’t help myself and still use a tiny shake or two but then I add my own spices/seasonings to pick up the same flavor profile without all the sodium.

Usually mayo is used in crab cakes/crab balls but again, I only use about a tbsp and then I use another substitute. And I know plant based mayo doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but when I was comparing mayo for the ‘healthiest’ version, I found that even though this one has a titch more sodium than the others, it had zero cholesterol, less fat and less calories than its counterpart. But you do you obviously my dears!

So then I substitute the rest with plain non fat Greek yogurt of any brand. I am obsessed with this for probiotics, protein and way less sodium and fat, etc etc! I use it a lot for dressings and sauces and in place of sour cream. Basically I eat it for savory meals instead of eating it as actual yogurt with fruit.

Malt vinegar is for sure optional and you can use apple cider vinegar but baby I am obsessed with malt vinegar! I find it to go perfectly with Maryland blue crab and it’s just the best vinegar in my honest opinion. Y’all ever put it on French fries?! Oh so good! It reminds me of the boardwalk by the ocean.

I use these Glass bowls from Amazon because sometimes if I’m meal prepping I just make this mixture ahead of time and pop the lid on it to store in the fridge for later! Easy peasy! Oh and…

Gold flatware is from Amazon and has a prime day deal today so I figured I would throw that in there because baby $22.88 is such a great deal and my neuro spicy loves the shape of the spoons! Which by the way, if you don’t have Amazon prime you can sign up for a free 30 Day Trial by clicking that link! Perfect timing prime day deals baby!

You do not have to use Disposable gloves to roll your crab balls but I prefer it because I hate washing my hands a million times, they get too dry! I also find this Amazon purchase a huge help for being sanitary when making things with raw meat or eggs. Oh and I love them when using icing for cakes cuz the greasiness of the butter drives me insane and I feel like it’s impossible to wash off. But if you wash your hands before rolling your balls, you’re good to go without them!

I make these crab balls in two batches and let me just emphasize it’s important to preheat your air fryer! It really helps cook them to perfection!
Ingredients:
- 16 oz Maryland blue crab (I used special but only because it was on sale, so you can use whatever your heart desires)
- 1/2 cup plain non fat Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp mayo of your choice (or not at all if you’re going even more low sodium)
- 2-3 tbsp bread crumbs
- 1/4 tsp old bay (or omit if you’re going even more low sodium or don’t have access to it)
- 1 tsp each garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, paprika, dried parsley flakes, malt vinegar
- 1/4 red onion and red pepper, diced
Directions:
- Preheat air fryer on 380°F (without the liner if you’re using one)
- Rinse crab meat, lightly squeeze out the water and let set on paper towels to dry while you’re cutting your veg
- Add everything together in a bowl and mix together then roll crab mixture into balls
- Line your air fryer and air fry in two batches. I do 380°F for 8 mins, roll them around/flip them and air fry for another 4 minutes. That being said, please be mindful that all air fryers are different, this is just using the pink Paris Hilton air fryer
- Enjoy!

We’ve eaten these crab balls on their own, on a sub roll with condiments, broken up on some hint of salt Triscuits, I mean the possibilities are endless!

Ok love you bye
