Dot cakes have been going viral on TikTok as a fun dessert recipe for the summer, but fall is just around the corner. Let’s make these viral dot cakes into a fun Halloween sweet treat!

I made these dot cakes more simple by using any yellow/vanilla box cake mix, but let’s modify it so no one knows its box cake mix. The best hacks for box cake mix is to use the back ingredients as a guide and use milk instead of water, add an extra egg and add a 1/2 of a box of instant vanilla pudding mix to the cake mix.

It’s good to whisk by hand so that it’s not over mixed and your cake comes out nice and fluffy. Everything I link in this recipe is from Amazon (affiliate).

Gel food coloring is the best to use and the neon colors make for fun Halloween dot cakes.

Just alternate colors when adding to the cake pan but don’t mix them too much or they will all mix together and not stay separate. Bake according to package directions.

You can make the cake the day before and keep it wrapped tightly in the fridge. Either way, just make sure it is cooled completely. Then use the Dessert cups to cut out the cake pieces. Use the leftover scraps to make fill the rest of the cake cups to yield more dot cakes.

Most any cake frosting will work for this recipe. You can keep it super simple by using store bought frosting but homemade elevates the dot cakes even more. This icing recipe worked out so well. It works perfectly in the middle of homemade oatmeal creme pies too.
1/4 cup softened butter (57g)
1/4 cup shortening (48g)
3/4 cup powdered sugar (90g)
1/2 cup marshmallow fluff (64g)
2 tsp light corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla bean paste
1/4 tsp salt
Cream together the butter and shortening, then add the rest of the ingredients and whisk until a beautiful icing forms

The homemade marshmallow fluff really makes it but you can certainly use store bought for ease. Just pipe the frosting on the mini cakes.

And spread evenly

You can use any sprinkles your heart desires. I loved these Halloween dot sprinkles and Halloween jimmies. You can use whatever you have on hand, really.

Lightly tap your cake onto the sprinkles and voila.

Halloween dot cakes!

These little dessert cups were perfect for these viral dot cakes but you can also use whatever you have at home if you’re making them just for your family!

What’s your favorite fall dessert??
