Smash Burger Tacos & No Salt Quick Pickles (Low Sodium, Gluten Free, Plant Based)

Smash Burger Tacos are a fun viral dish using the Smash Burger method in cooking the meat. In these Smash Burger Tacos, I decided to use Impossible Ground because they have a new package and I wanted to share it with y’all.

The Impossible Ground plant based meat does have the same delicious taste but in what I think is much better packaging to blend in with the traditional meat products. That helps our brains decide that this is the same when switching to plant based. Now, I will say, as someone who was once vegan, you have to pick your battles based on your own dietary needs. So the Impossible Ground has no cholesterol which is awesome but does have more sodium than regular meat. Do with that information, what you will.

First thing we need to do is season our meat! Whether you’re using plant based meat or even ground turkey or chicken, season your meats! The seasoning blend I used is as follows and has no salt added, but also I added a little Mexican flair to make it more of a taco vibe for Cinco De Mayo. I just used 1/2 teaspoon each of

Y’all know how much I love my Ellie’s Best Vital 7 Organic Mushroom Extract Powder from Amazon, but I also got this No Salt Added Chili Powder recently from Amazon too because I did not realize that a lot of regular chili powders contain salt! That was a silly oversight on my part! The one I got tastes much better and is more cost effective with Amazon Prime anyways!

After you rolled your meat into balls (I made 6), preheat and oil your cast iron pan (from Amazon) on medium. I will say that if you look at this picture, don’t so that. I should’ve evenly spread out the oil or just used Pamela because I had trouble on the first one sticking but after I figured that out, it was golden pony boy.

Then you’re going to take your corn tortilla and smash it down with your hand a bit and then get out your spatula to smash that burger! You want a nice thin smash burger taco, but be sure not to go all the way down, especially with the impossible ground because then it won’t stay together and start breaking up into grounds and then you might as well have just made a regular taco at that point.

After about 5 minutes, give or take, flip your smash burger taco and then add a little cheese to your taco if that is something you are into. You can certainly use plant based cheese, or no cheese at all. But regardless of your cheese choice, the trick is to cover it up so the steam can help melt that cheese, baby!

After another few minutes, once you have your desired corn tortilla crispiness, you can remove from heat and top you smash burger tacos! Now, I went ahead and just closed mine right away into a taco shape, that way they stayed in a taco shape since I wasn’t eating them all right away. I think next time, I won’t do that because the family ate them up super fast!

The Smash Burger Taco vibe is supposed to be like a Big Mac or Animal Style. So I made a special sauce to put on top that has no salt added. A no salt added Animal style Sauce or Mac sauce, if you will.

This low sodium thousand island essence vibe of special sauce bonanza for our smash burger tacos can be made ahead of time, which I did because it helps to marry the flavors.

Smash Burger Taco Special Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp plain non fat greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp Hellman’s vegan mayo (or any mayo of your choosing)
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp low sodium no sugar added great value ketchup
  • 1/4 tsp each paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, mushroom powder

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and let set in fridge until use

I also made the No Salt Quick Pickles ahead of time too so that they could get nice and pickle-y! I went for a dill pickle vibe since that is what is used in the original smash burger tacos viral TikTok videos. Also, I love these glass bowls from Amazon because they have lids, so I am able to just pop that on and put them in the fridge after mixing!

No Salt Dill Quick Pickle:

  • 1 Cucumber, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tbsp jarlic (minced garlic from the jar)
  • 1/2 tsp each dried dill weed, onion powder and black pepper
  • Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix the jarlic and seasonings into the cucumber and then fill up with vinegar until covered. It is probably more traditional to use a white vinegar but I love apple cider vinegar so much. So, do whatever your heart desires! Then cover and store in the fridge until use! These are not like regular pickles and aren’t canned or jarred so they won’t last as long but I enjoyed them on salads and Sammies later in the week!

Y’all like my Crap Bag from Amazon??? Do you know the reference??? It cracks me up!

Then you just add some shredded lettuce and diced onion to your smash burger taco, as well as your no salt added quick pickle and no salt added animal style special sauce too!

Come on smash burger taco realness!!!!

She’s beauty and she’s grace, she’s smash burger taco in her face!

Thank you so much for being here for this fun take on Cinco De Mayo this year with Smash Burger Tacos! I hope you found something cool in this blog post recipe and I hope you have an incredible Cinco De Mayo!

Ok love you bye.

I have other Cinco De Mayo food ideas on this site! My husband loves Mexican food so much so it’s certainly a staple around here! And fun fact, corn tortillas are only 20mg of sodium, compared to 250mg for a flour tortilla….AND they are only like $4 for 80 corn tortillas! You can use them up by making things like my Grilled Harissa Chicken Taquitos

Homemade Tostadas using potatoes instead of meat and also my own version of taco seasonings so you don’t have to use salt!

Maybe some Vegan Chikin Taquitos would be more your style for Cinco De Mayo

Oh my gosh and I forgot, my Mashed Potato Tacos in the air fryer are amazingggggg! Great for folks who don’t love Mexican dishes but want a Cinco De Mayo vibe!

Same goes for these Tex Mex Breakfast Taquitos
